Translating Cultural Strengths into Home Literacy Practices
Baby Raven Reads (BRR) is an innovative Sealaska Heritage program promoting early literacy skills for Alaska Native children up to 5 years old. It is based on research that confirms effectiveness of using culturally based teaching resources and methods to improve academic achievement. BRR provides family events, monthly literacy kits, professional development for care providers and early educators, and free culturally relevant, place-based books to families. Books publishes through the program also help educate non-Native families about Alaska Native cultures, place-based storytelling, and traditional oral literature.
